Unturned II was an upcoming, free-to-play survival game being developed by Smartly Dressed Games. It would have been a sequel to Unturned, and set in a similarly post-apocalyptic world. The game was being developed in Unreal Engine 4, and would have been available on Steam. The game's development was indefinitely paused on May 11, 2022.

As a sequel, the Unturned II would have featured a more detailed art style, new or returning content, and more complex game mechanics. Although development was paused, some of the plans for the game have been implemented into Unturned instead.

Private beta

Unturned II was first available through a private, early demo called the "Vehicle Demo". This demo was released to select groups of people on October 24, 2018. It included three identical Hatchbacks, and a small test environment for players to drive around on. Aside from showcasing vehicle mechanics, the demo also included a very basic implementation of seasons. To start, only a couple dozen people had access to this demo build.

More product keys were distributed the following week on November 2, 2018. This was coined as a "Wave One" distribution of Steam product keys, and were primarily given out to active community members on the official game forums. Over 100 products keys were given out by this time, and a second wave of product keys would be distributed on May 3, 2019.

On July 19 of that same year, any Unturned players with at least 2,400 hours of playtime were eligible. This requirement was originally tied to owning the Experienced Beret cosmetic item (which was awarded to players with 2,400 hours of playtime), but was replaced by the Invitation item instead when the number of hours required started being reduced. By the time development was indefinitely paused, the requirement had been reduced to 1,200 hours.

Game mechanics

Vehicles

Vehicles feature several new mechanics not present in the game's predecessor. All vehicles have several additional controls, for functions like turn signals, different lights, and ignition. Vehicles also have windows, which can be rolled up and down, and when all windows are closed they put the vehicle in a state of pressurization. Pressurization changes how outdoor audio is heard by the player. With dual-wielding mechanics, players can both steer and operate items such as firearms at the same time. Due to entity hierarchy movement, players can stand atop moving vehicles and share their momentum. Vehicle doors can be locked and unlocked with a car key.

Item variation

In Unturned, item variants are all considered unique items internally. In Unturned II this has been replaced with a more optimized system. Clothing items have textile variation, which allows for different patterns and colors of the same clothing piece. Holographic sights have reticle variation, where the color of the sight may differ.

Attachment system

The attachment system in Unturned II is expanded over its predecessor. There are two main groups of attachments: modular components, and rail attachments. Modular components make up parts such as barrels, handguards, stocks, and receivers. Unlike Unturned where these all of these components are a single item that makes up the firearm itself, in Unturned II a firearm is just its receiver component. Ghillie netting can be equipped on to different components, such as receivers and handguards, to mask the firearm in foliage.

Rail attachments represent the implementation of the traditional Unturned attachment system, but now utilize a rail system as well. Different components have different rail systems—such as Picatinny or Weaver—which affect the type of attachments that can be equipped to the firearm. There are also rail attachments which add more rails to a firearm, such as canted Picatinny rails. Due to using a rail-based system, there are far fewer restrictions on the number of attachments that can be equipped.

Unturned II features a more realistic caliber system when handling ammunition, and ammunition can be manually sorted in magazines, or removed entirely and placed into stacks by themselves or in various sizes of ammunition storage.

Clothing system

Unturned II is being developed with the capability for more clothing slots in mind. The player has been shown with upwards of fourteen slots for different clothing types. The types were: hats, glasses, necklaces, slings, backpacks, vests, overcoats, shirts, bracelets, gloves, belts, pants, and shoes.

Excursions

Excursions would have allowed players to travel to the alternate reality the Turned originated from. These take place in very dark and overgrown frontier fortified complexes. The alternate reality is planned to possibly exist in a manner similar to the Upside Down in Stranger Things. It would be impossible for players to survive in Excursions for a long time. Players must enter, loot, and extract as quickly as possible.
