Dying Light is an open world first-person survival horror video game developed by the Polish game company Techland. The game was released in North America for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows on January 27, 2015. It was released in Europe and Australia the following day.

Dying Light × Unturned

Dying Light developers Techland teamed up with Unturned developers Smartly Dressed Games for an April Fools' Day crossover event.

The promotional event page for a "Dying Light x Unturned Crossover And Sale" was accidentally leaked by Valve on March 27, 2020. The event page would be taken down later that same day. On March 31, Techland began a promotional sale on Dying Light content, and on April 1 the promotional event was officially announced and launched. Both games released an update containing content themed around each other's game. The events were scheduled to end on April 6, but they were instead extended to April 10 due to the positive reception.

Dying Light's event

During the crossover event in Dying Light, many of the zombies wore cardboard boxes with the signature Unturned zombie face painted on them, and the boxes could be knocked off when struck. Techland also released a free DLC called the Dying Light - Unturned Weapon Pack, which contains a unique outfit for the protagonist, and three blueprints for new "low-poly" weapons modeled after the Rake, Machete, and Hockey Stick as they appear in Unturned. The promotional weapons featured increased durability compared to most other weapons.

Players could redeem a "weapon docket" with the code OPERATIONMAPLELEAF.

Two in-game special community events were available during the crossover, and double the experience was provided. The "Now That's A Cosplay" personal quest would reward a player if they successfully hunted and killed multiple volatiles before the end of the crossover event. The "This Can't Be Happening" global quest let all players collectively work together to kill 25,000,000 zombies, which rewarded all players at the time upon its completion.

Unturned's event

In Unturned, the volatiles from Dying Light would appear at night. Unlike normal zombies, they have an unhinged and split jaw, and multiple protruding ribs. They could only spawn at night, and would instantly burst into flames when daytime came. They also share the same screams and death sounds as their source material. The game's airdrops were also reskinned to be visually similar to the airdrops from the Global Relief Effort in Dying Light.

With the promotional event also came a couple permanent additions. The Washington map was updated to feature several blue trash bags, which would prevent fall damage if landed upon. Additionally, anyone who owned Dying Light and had played for at least ten minutes would receive the Korek Machete skin in Unturned.
